Prebiotic, probiotic, postbiotic

Three words that get used interchangeably in marketing and mean genuinely different things. Once the pathway is clear, so are the definitions.

One pathway

Fibre → Microbes → Postbiotics.

That is the whole thing. A substrate arrives, organisms metabolise it, and the products of that metabolism are what reach you. Each of the three words describes a different position in that line.

Prebiotic: the substrate

A prebiotic is a substrate that resident microorganisms use, in a way that benefits the host. It is the input.

Note what the definition does not require. It says nothing about forming a gel, adding bulk, or doing anything mechanical. And it does not follow that all fibre qualifies — a fibre that neither you nor your microbes can break down is still fibre, and can still be useful for bulk, but it is not feeding anything.

Probiotic: the organism

A probiotic is a live microorganism which, in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit. It is the worker, not the food.

Two things follow that are worth holding on to. The benefit is strain-specific — evidence for one strain is not evidence for another, even within the same species. And it has to be alive and present in sufficient quantity at the point of consumption, which is a manufacturing and storage problem as much as a biological one.

Postbiotic: the product

This is the newest of the three and the most loosely used.

The formal definition describes a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit — so a deliberately prepared, non-living microbial product.

In everyday use, and in a good deal of marketing, "postbiotic" is stretched to cover microbial metabolites — the short-chain fatty acids and other compounds microbes make. That broader usage is common enough to be worth knowing, but the two meanings are not the same thing, and a product using the word may mean either.

For the rest of this course we will mostly say what we mean: short-chain fatty acids, or simply metabolites.

Why the distinction is practical, not pedantic

These three sit at different points in the pathway, so they answer different questions.

  • A prebiotic supplies raw material to whatever community you already have.
  • A probiotic attempts to add to that community.
  • A postbiotic skips the community and delivers a product directly.

Which of those makes sense depends on whether your constraint is substrate, population, or output — and those are genuinely different situations. A product that supplies raw material cannot do the job of one that adds organisms, and neither is interchangeable with taking a metabolite directly.

Go deeper: why the direct route is not automatically the best one

If a metabolite is the thing that matters, it is reasonable to ask why not simply take it. Part of the answer is location and timing: fermentation produces those compounds continuously, in the colon, next to the cells that use them. A dose taken by mouth is one delivery, once, and has to survive the journey.

The other part is that fermentation does not produce one compound. It yields several short-chain fatty acids in a ratio, plus gases, plus effects on the community itself. Substituting one purified molecule is not equivalent to the process that makes it — which is not an argument that direct delivery never works, only that they are different interventions.

Prebiotic is the food. Probiotic is the worker. Postbiotic is the product. Same pathway, three positions — and a claim about one is not a claim about the others.

What to hold on to

When a label says "prebiotic", ask what the organisms are supposed to do with it. When it says "probiotic", ask which strain and how much. When it says "postbiotic", ask which of the two meanings is intended.

Next: the metabolites themselves. There are three that matter most, and they are not variations on one theme.
